THE SITE'S UP!! THE SITE'S UP!!

The COMIC isn't, but hey, one thing at a time...
I'm hoping to start the strip by August 18 at the latest. (Most likely, it'll start on a Monday -- hopefully before August is over!)
When it does start, it will update on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to begin with.

WHILE YOU'RE WAITING, HOWZABOUD I TELL YOU SOMETHING ABOUT THE STRIP:

It's about a dodo bird (guessed that, did you...) named Oswald, living among humans. Shortly, he'll be entering the wonderful world of Cubicle-Land, where he will encounter heartless management, clueless coworkers, and the occasional world-domination plot. Expect outside-the-office hijinks as well -- this isn't just going to be "Dilbert" with feathers!

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, BOB...

Rather a sad note to start on, but I thought that the passing of Bob Hope warranted some mention. I hope that as we remember Bob, the sadness of his passing will be tempered by memories of the joy he brought to so many people.

OH, BY THE WAY . . . A NOTE ABOUT EMAIL

I can be reached at wayofthedodo(at)hotmail.com. You know the routine -- replace the "(at)" with the symbol. Please put something related to the strip in the subject line so I don't delete it with all the get-rich-quick scams and Viagra ads. (Can you tell I really don't want to get loads of spam?)

WHAT'S HAPPENING AUGUST 18?

Let's make it official. August 18 is the start date. Be here on August 18, 2003 for the launch of WAY OF THE DODO!
The plan is that the comic will update on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to begin with. Once I get into the swing of things, I hope to ramp that up to six days a week!

NO, THIS DOESN'T MEAN YOU NEED GLASSES...

My apologies to those of you who saw Monday's "teaser" and rushed out to get your eyes checked!
I've replaced it with a less blurry version. I tried to fix the red-lettered version, but after a while I got tired of fighting with Paint Shop and just changed the lettering to white.
The moral of the story: Don't work with red lettering.
Those of you who weren't struck blind by yesterday's posting, is this any better?
Hopefully, we won't have problems like this when the strip starts on August 18!

WELCOME TO WAY OF THE DODO!

What did I tell you? It's August 18 and will you look at that -- there's a comic strip! (Kind of looks like it caught the dodo by surprise as well, doesn't it?)

SHARE YOUR WORKPLACE HORROR STORIES!

Click HERE to share your true tales of idiocy in action. Or office politics run amok. Or whatever makes you want to run off to Tibet and become a plumber. Who knows? Your story might inspire a comic or two. (Of course, all names and such would have been changed to the point where you'd probably have to have been there to recognize it!) And those of you who are already Tibetan plumbers can click HERE to tell me what it's like.

REMEMBER PRINT COMICS?

The Cleveland Plain Dealer recently published the results of a reader survey they took a while back about their comics page. I seem to be the only Clevelander who likes "Doonesbury!" The poll results can be found here if anyone's interested.

THE CHOP SHOP IS CLOSED FOR BUSINESS

note: See the strip I'm talking about here.
Why, yes, I DID draw today's strip as a two-panel instead of a three-panel comic for the express purpose of showing off Oswald's car! How nice of you to notice! I've been frustrated up till now, because in order to draw Oswald large enough to be visible, I had to cut most of the car out of the panel. I put a lot of work into that car, and I'd like to be able to show the whole thing once in a while!

THEY MIGHT HAVE IT IN THE OTHER PLACE...

Every now and then, America Online still sends out disks trying to get my father (who passed away early in 2002) to join back up. Somehow I doubt that AOL service is available where he is now!

Although my comic does not update on Thursdays, I felt that I should say or do something to acknowledge this day. Even so, it's hard to know quite what to say.
To me, the attack was too just big and shocking to even process at first. I first heard of it on the radio as I was arriving at work. And that was just a brief news item that an airplane (or a second airplane, I'm not sure which) had hit the World Trade Center, heard just before I turned the car off to go inside. All morning and throughout the next couple of days, it seemed that with every piece of news that trickled in, the story took another turn for the worse.
I think that for many years to come, our I-want-everything-right-now society will have to stop for a while and acknowledge the horrible searing wound on our national psyche, a wound that we can't imagine will ever heal.
One of the images from September 11 that has stayed with me was a photograph I saw on CNN's website. It showed a huge cloud of smoke billowing out over New York Harbor, with a tiny little object in the foreground.
It took me a moment to realize that it was the Statue of Liberty.
That image says to me that although we were dealt a grievous blow that day, this nation is still standing. Through all the horror, we're still here. And we're not going to roll over and give in to those who would destroy this experiment in government of, by, and for the people.

Today's comic is the closest I've come yet to missing an update deadline. I have GOT to start building up a buffer so I'm not sitting here at 11 the night before, scrambling to finish the comic!

GUEST STRIP ALERT

Chris Whetstone of No 4th Wall to Break surprised me by starting out his guest week with the two comics I drew for him. Check them out here.
(EDIT: It looks like http://www.no4thwall.com/archive_page.php?id=185">this would be the link for the page on Chris' new site. But I can't get the strips to load there, so I'm leaving the old link up.)

WOWSERS!

As of Tuesday morning, my hit counter shows some 36 hits for Monday! That's up from single digits last week!
Thank you, Chris!

"WHY, I COULD PULL A BETTER PUNCHLINE OUT OF MY..."

Have you ever looked at a Dodo strip and thought those or similar words? Well, now's your chance to let me know!
I'm adding a new feature to this site: The "You Call That A Punchline?!" contest. Click on the "YCTAP?!" link for further details. C'mon, it'll be fun!
Now, just 'cause it's called a contest, don't think that means I'm giving out prizes or anything! Winners get their names and punchline posted, an' THAT'S IT.

Okay, Keenspace was down for most of TUESDAY. Not Thursday, TUESDAY. I'm not sure what's going on, I'm just glad it's back up!
Having finished a comic for Sept. 24, I was beginning to wonder if I was going to have a site to put it on!
Remember: TUESDAY.
